You are very lucky if you have the time and budget to spend your entire week in Vienna, Austria. It is not a joke exploring the city in a week’s time, but seeing top attractions, tasting delicious Viennese cuisine, and hearing world-class music and performances the things that will make your stay in the city worthwhile. Here are some things to do while visiting the very vibrant Vienna:

 

Central Vienna

Make sure to include in your Central Vienna tour the Stephansdom for architecture appreciation, Haas & Haas for a cup of tea, Hoher Markt for a bit of Vienna history, and Do & Co for a satisfying lunch (with a splendid view of Stephansplatz). Spend your afternoon exploring antique shops and galleries in Graben and Kohlmarkt and seeing where Emperor Franz Joseph state apartment in Hofburg Palace. End your day by jumping onto tram Nos. 1 or 2 and be in awe of the gorgeous floodlit buildings.

The Opera and Naschmarkt Area

Start your day by admiring the stunning Staatsoper and then visit the Art Nouveau building, Secession Building. You should not miss here the striking Beethoven Frieze. The Akademie der bildenden Künster is a short walking distance from Olbrich’s Secessionist masterwork. It is worth an hour or two, especially for its fine collection of Rubens paintings. Then sip a hot coffee at the redesigned Café Museum.

Roam around the Naschmarkt market area and feel the lively atmosphere. You will see from here the Majolika Haus, theWagner Haus, and the Theater an der Wien. Head to the Mariahilfer Strasse and spend your afternoon and evening there. See an opera performance.

Vienna outskirts

Beat the tourist crowd by beginning your day at Schloss Schönbrunn, the former imperial summer residence. Walk in its park and visiting the oldest zoo in the world. After lunch, take the Bus No. 48A and visit the Kirche am Steinhof. If you want a rustic experience, head towards Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg and marvel at the charming vineyards and beautiful hiking paths. Conclude your day by enjoying Viennese vintage wines in one of the many taverns in Grinzing.

Vienna’s student district

Your week in Vienna should include the student district in the itinerary. Start off with Vienna University. After exploring the wonderful marble entrance hall and the beautiful courtyard, visit the Votivkirche and walk up Alser Strasse.

Choose one of the great pubs in the former General Hospital’s first large courtyard and mingle with crowds of students. Then go to courtyard 13 and roam around the Pathologisch-Anatomisches Museum. For a hearty lunch, visit Porzellangasse. Before going to the Sigmund Freud Museum, you should pass by Servitenkirche and appreciate its Baroque interior. Cap the day off by attending a classical music performance in the Palais Liechtenstein.
